Something Wicked – featuring Lindy Bop and Kate Spade

Another Halloween, and surprisingly I’m not in costume. Cosplay is my hobby and Halloween is my favorite holiday, but this year it means something so much more.

I’ve always thought about blogging consistently. I know that deep down, I’m happiest when putting together a great outfit to wear (whether that’s at a convention, for work, or simply going out for fun…geek style is universal!). But as many bloggers realize, there’s often quite a bit of adversity to face.

Am I posting too much? Not enough? Are my posts even interesting? Do I look and sound just like someone else? Am I taking enough risks while staying consistent to my own voice? And above else, when does the conversation start between writer and reader?

Sometimes to garner that much courage, you need to put on your boldest face, your boldest dress (a disguise from the anxiety, if you will!) and take your next (well-heeled) step into the world you want to build, live, and ultimately inspire to be better.

For me, that’s this little haunted number from Lindy Bop.

If you’re unfamiliar with Lindy Bop, don’t worry, you haven’t missed out on too much yet! While not strictly a name in the geek style sphere, Lindy Bop hails from the UK (I believe their HQ is in or near Manchester, which is such a fun city to visit!) and specializes in vintage and pinup fashion in a variety of fun prints or colorful solids at reasonable price points. This particular dress is in the Vanessa style, something a bit more curve hugging than I tend to gravitate towards, but bold steps require making a statement, of course! The haunted castle print was an incredible sale find I found in my size over the summer and it’s been hanging in my closet for just the right moment.

I think I found it.

With easy shipping, durable material and construction, sizes up to a 6X (I’m wearing a 4XL here, and I tend to fit a size 14 to 16 at Torrid and Eloquii, though most other dresses and skirts I fit best into a Lindy Bop 3XL. Each Lindy piece has its own size chart, so make sure you check your measurements against the chart before you buy!) and prints that fit a variety of geek chic lifestyles (have you seen their travel-inspired dresses yet? Or their prints devoted to tea and books?), Lindy Bop should be on any vintage-style loving geek’s shopping list. While I’ve snagged several incredible pieces for work (geek chic in the 9 to 5? I’m all about that life!), sometimes a girl just needs a great dress for going out. Presumably to see a horror movie or two. Top it off with some vintage-inspired sunglasses and bag from Kate Spade, and you’re looking equally stylish and spooky.

Not going to lie, this is a dream Dapper Day look for me. I could ride Haunted Mansion over and over in this dress!

But beyond the outfit today, what I can promise you going forward at this time is a drive and commitment to provide style inspiration as much as I can (remember that 9 to 5?). I don’t have a professional photographer and my closet grows as much as my budget allows, but every entry I share with you is something I’m proud to wear. And if you’re reading this blog, I hope you’ll be inspired to let your geek side shine while developing your own style, your own geek chic.

Until next time (and Happy Halloween!)

In the Name of the Moon!

dsc_0773

It’s not strange that Sailor Moon was my first anime. That could be said for many women who grew up with the original Toonami, or even earlier than that with early morning DIC dubbed broadcasts of Sailor Moon. What I do find strange is that it took until the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon and the promotion of a new remake of Usagi’s story to finally see a surge in senshi style. Many of us wanted to become a pretty soldier and we all have our favorites, but beyond telling others of our favorite magical girl (fanart, fanfiction, cosplay, and more come to mind), there wasn’t much out there beyond a keychain or a patch that we could show the world how much we love and appreciate Sailor Moon. Until now.

I wear a lot of Hot Topic clothing and accessories in my posts. It’s of no surprise that Hot Topic (and their sister company, Torrid) seem to have a monopoly on the big business of geek fashion. The recent acquisition of Her Universe by Hot Topic for future releases also bodes well for the retail giant for the future of fandom style (though I’m eager to see what ThinkGeek has come up with their new Star Trek by Her Universe line, debuting Tuesday 11/15!). And while Hot Topic’s Studio Ghibli by Her Universe pieces offer fans something beyond a t-shirt and a hooded sweatshirt, I find that where Hot Topic suffers in geek fashion options lies with their anime offerings.  We’ll get a skirt here, a dress there, but not much else. So when this Sailor Moon dress was released for both regular and plus sizes, I didn’t hesitate to add it to my closet!

Part Of Your World

I’ll be honest: if I was Ariel, my first thought once acquiring human legs wouldn’t be to find a prince. It would be to finally try on awesome pairs of jeans and heels that, until now, I wouldn’t have dreamed of being able to wear. Because yes, while falling in love with a prince is great, falling in love with the perfect fitting pair of jeans is like finding your soulmate.

At least that’s what I tell myself every time I try on a pair of jeans from Target’s Ava & Viv Collection. We all have our reasons for hitting up the retail giant. Mine usually involve picking up a new tub of Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (fantastic for normal to dry skin for waking up hydrated) or Merona tank tops (perfect for layering. Their tees, tanks, and long sleeve tees fit me perfectly in XXL!). However, when I need a pair of jeans in a pinch, I simply search for Ava & Viv jeans in my size, in the cut I need. The denim is thick but has stretch and I’ve yet to wear out the inner thighs (a definite perk when you’re plus sized!). On sale or not, the price is difficult to beat. While they don’t have a wide variety of colors most of the time, it’s a great place to stock up on your blue denim of all shades.

So while the sea has a hot crustacean band, I think Ariel would marvel at all the items she could add to her collection. Like these jeans and purple suede wedges (throwback to her seashell bikini!). Think of all the shoes she could hoard and Prince Eric becomes an afterthought.

Romance with a glass of wine

dsc_0649

After I did this shoot, I was in the mood for a glass of wine. With all the wine tones in this look, I’m sure you understand.

I happened to not have any Halloween-specific plans last weekend, which for me is a bit weird. It’s my favorite holiday, and being a cosplayer I have a closet full of outfits to choose from. But with my day job and working to restart and commit to Geek & Chic, I felt uninspired to throw on an easy-to-wear costume and hit the bar or club scene. Instead, I put together this Nightmare Before Christmas themed look: themed, but not costume-y. I like how the jacket and shorts, while in different fabrics, give the illusion of a suit made for going out.

That said, after this was shot, I went for a fondue dinner as I thought it was far away from bars and clubs where Halloween costumes were running rampant. To my surprise, many of the fellow diners were not only in costume, but loved my skull tights. C’est la vie, that’ll teach me to assume no one would be in costume at dinner!

I’ll probably put some costume features here this month (including an outfit from a very popular mobile game right now!), but the focus here is fashion. And with this lightweight top with Jack and Sally, it’s something I want to wear over and over. Here it is styled for Halloween, but check back next month to see it holiday party-appropriate. It’ll stand out in the sea of LBDs.

This is Halloween! This is Halloween!

dsc_0626

And surprisingly, it’s not a fandom-themed look today. Halloween is my favorite holiday, yet I wanted to dress up without feeling like I’m in a costume. In fact, I’m in a costume quite a few times a year as a cosplayer, so dressing up for Halloween leaves me with the feeling of having a full closet and nothing to wear. But seeing Boohoo‘s incredible selection of affordable, fun Halloween fashion got me into a spooky mood. And my first mini swing dress. For someone who thrives on showing a defined waist (I carry most of my weight in my back and midsection. Apple shaped with broad shoulders, I suppose?) this was definitely out of my comfort zone. And quite scary. Appropriate for the holiday.

Quidditch or Hogsmeade…why not both?

So, it’s been a minute since I’ve published something new.

I needed a hiatus, to refocus my blog, learn a bit more about professional social media, and most importantly, listen to my creative voice. Personal style and blogs are exploding over the internet, especially geek style, and that’s great! We’re able to learn from each other and get inspired by one another.

But it can be overwhelming at times. How can I be sure my content is unique? Will people notice my content if there’s so many other influencers out there? And perhaps over the course of 2016…how do you even keep up with all of these new collaboration collections!?

Between Hot TopicTorridThink GeekHer UniverseBox Lunch, We Love Fine, independent designers on Etsy, and so many emerging plus size retailers…it can be difficult to pick and choose what we want to add to our closets. In the past month alone we’ve seen releases for Once Upon a Time, Marvel (in collaboration with Her Universe), Outlander, and most recently at TorridNever Land, a collection inspired by Disney’s Peter Pan. And if you’re like me, you like to mix and match your geeky pieces with closet staples and other eye-catching pieces from other brands which may not necessarily be geek themed.

The secret? You don’t have to. You can shop your closet to mix and match for new inspiration. There’s no harm or foul in that. And when you’re choosing what to wear for hanging out with friends, for work, for a date, or a special occasion, you won’t be showing up in the same outfit as another geek fashionista.

And that’s what I challenged myself to do for the first post back on the blog.

Have Courage and Be Kind

It’s New Years Eve, which is wonderful for three things: 1. champagne, 2. New Years resolutions, and 3. dressing up! I fell in love with the new Cinderella film from March this year. Belle had been my favorite princess as a young girl (and really, she still is) but the beautiful costumes and sets from Cinderella won me over. Everything looked so perfect and was precisely what I wanted from a Disney fairytale.

The motto from the movie, “Have courage and be kind”, has stuck with me throughout the year. It’s something I actively try to do, but also makes a great resolution for 2016 (Of course, getting into better shape, completing more costumes, seeing friends, and staying fashionable are also on the list). Don’t be afraid to try new things and don’t be afraid to forgive.

So, when the Hot Topic and Torrid Cinderella collection was released back in March, I knew the powder blue dress had to be mine. I’ve been holding onto it until New Years Eve, to celebrate properly while feeling, just a little bit, like a princess.

This is my house

I love working out.

It’s no secret, I love lifting weights. I’ve been lifting for over half my life and began a cardio regimen a bit later on. Weights are my first fitness love, and there’s no better feeling for me than to complete a difficult lift or push my way through a plyometrics workout. But I’ve never been a fan of watching sports. I’m from St. Louis originally, so the Cardinals reaching the playoffs is a must-watch in my house, but otherwise I don’t shape my schedule by which team is playing when. Wrestling is the exception.

I never thought I’d be a fan, really. I got into watching it because my boyfriend is obsessed. He started watching the WWF as a child and kept up his interest into adulthood. I realized that I could simply write it off as a silly obsession (and never see him Mondays, Thursdays, and the occasional Sunday), or give it a try and learn why it interests him so much. And I get it now. A lot of it is a “work”, and pretty funny at times, but the stars of the WWE are talented athletes. For me, I took quickly to the Divas division, the women’s wrestling section of the organization (for those not in the know!). They’re a relatively new group compared to the men’s division and titles, but have consistently provided amazing matches in 2015 (Bayley vs. Sasha! Charlotte vs. Paige!). I knew I wanted to have some Divas love on the blog as soon as I began this project, and who better than my favorite Diva.

Making Christmas La La La!

It’s Christmas day, which means presents, food, family, friends, and most often, fashion! Geek and Chic Plus is very new, but I wanted to surprise you with a fun Christmas look anyway. Like the R2-D2 inspired outfit from yesterday, it was warm, sunny, and definitely resembling spring more than winter when I styled this look. But I wanted to pay tribute to one of my favorite holiday movies (Halloween and Christmas, of course!): The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I was surprised to find this dress at all, much less from places like Hot Topic and Torrid. Over the years I feel like both companies are slowly becoming more geek-friendly, and the involvement of Her Universe has definitely helped. The Hot Topic I remember from my middle and high school days seems to be a thing of the past, but I’m not complaining. I feel excited to step into their stores, and very welcomed when I do.

So, when a clothing collection starring Jack Skellington, Sally, and their Halloweentown crew hit stores and online, I couldn’t resist snapping up a piece or two.

This is not the droid you’re looking for…

I’m going to take a guess and say most of you have seen The Force Awakens, right? Possibly more than once? While I’ve only seen it once (so far! Life got in the way this week), I can’t help but love the droids and other robots of the Star Wars universe. I know many fans are delighted by BB-8 (so am I! Naturally, a BB-8 look is coming soon!), but R2-D2 was always my first favorite character. Without human speech, he was given a fun, unpredictable personality, and makes a great mascot for the franchise.

Speaking of unpredictability, that’s precisely what I ran into while styling and shooting this look. This was shot in December, and it was much too warm for the coordinating coat and stockings I’d planned to wear with this ensemble. It was nearly too warm for the sweater, but I stuck it out anyway (and drank a lot of iced drinks). Sometimes you just have to work with what life throws at you. R2-D2 certainly does.
